VENICE
We slept a little late. Something
had bitten my wife on her thumb and by her left eye.
Both really itched and her eye was swollen.
She put some ice on her eye. We made coffee in a French press, ate cereal
and our treats with chocolate.
It was raining hard with a lot of thunder and lightning.
We decided that it was too bad out to go to St. Mark’s for the 10:30
Mass. We had nothing for
lunch. We thought about an omelet
but we didn’t have any butter or anything else to cook it in, so we took a
nap. It was 1:30 when we woke up.
The rain had stopped so we decided to venture out.
We had reserved tickets tonight for the Music in the Palazzo.
We saw the palace last night as we were on the Grand Canal.
We could see lights and
candle inside and people on the balconies. It
was beautiful. This was to be a
rather unique experience. The music
was La Traviata with various parts in
different rooms. The audience moved
from room to room. We decided we needed to go back and find out how to get to
the entrance of the music hall.
We found it, and it started to rain again very hard.
We stopped several places for lunch but they had stopped serving.
We made it to St. Mark’s square and stopped at Caffé
Florian. We were soaked. We got a
shrimp sandwich and a smoked beef sandwich and shared them.
It was a very nice café. It
was really raining hard and had turned cool so we got back on the vaporetto and
headed home.
We decided to try the grocery store and were surprised to find
it open. We got some wine, pasta,
chicken patties, ice cream, butter, bread etc.
We both came home soaked. Then
we decided that it was just too bad to go out again to the concert.
We had reservations but had not paid for our tickets.
The instructions on the website, where we had purchased the tickets, said
they only took cash. So we
wouldn’t be out any money. We had
really been looking forward to this experience and were sorry to have to miss
it. We cooked pasta and chicken for
dinner.
It finally stopped raining and the sun came out but it was too
late to go to the concert. We took a
walk along Fondamente Nuove, which was not far from the back of our apartment.
We came back home and read.
