WOODEN CATHEDRAL MODELS

My favorite hobby, since I was a child, has been woodworking. Over the years I have made furniture and dollhouses as well as assisting in building three of our personal homes. I've also always been interested in scroll saw artwork and sold many such items at craft shows and on the Internet.

About 25 years ago, I found a clock pattern for what was called the Apostles Clock. Upon examining the pattern, I figured no one in their right mind could ever build it.  About 5 years later, I found the plan, which I had stashed away, and decided to build it - at that time was not in my right mind. The plan called for the 12 apostles to be mounted on a rotating circle that went in one door and came out the other. I could only find 6 apostle statues and made them stationary on the front with no rotating circle.  In place of a rose window is a clock face with a Westminster Chime Clock.

Over the years, I  have made three other wooden cathedrals.  Two of them are "make believe" cathedrals like the Apostles Clock.  The fourth clock is of the facade of Ameins Cathedral in France.  I made two of them, one with the clock face for the Rose Window and the other with a  photographic copy of the actual  Rose window in the Cathedral.

I have used acetate for all of the windows and painted them with stained-glass paint. All of the clocks are illuminated from inside and show the beautiful colors of the stained-glass windows.

I have several other models of " make-believe" churches, which I hope to make someday

AMIENS CATHEDRAL CLOCK, FRANCE

I had spent over 300 hours in the construction of this 38 inch tall clock. This model, designed by Al Spicer of Greensboro, N.C. contains 636 pieces with 3,877 inside cuts.  This means that I drilled almost 4,000 holes with a drill bit the size of a needle and threaded the saw blade through each hole, often with just a little cut that took now more than two seconds.  The clock was amazing in that Mr. Spicer had never been to Amiens in person.
